Domain Name Registrations

Domain Name Registrations

Registration of Internet Domain Names

Introduction

This page exists to describe domain name registration services and our relationship with Nominet UK and other internet domain name registrars.

As a consequence of changes to the Nominet Registrar Agreement we are required to provide this page to explain what we do and why we do it because we fall between two definitions that Nominet use to pigeon-hole it’s registrars.

We are really "Self Managed" registrar because we do not sell domain names to the general public - we register our own names, named for friends and family and other businesses that we already have a trading relationship with, however because we have more than five entities with domain names (a purely arbitary number) we now have to act as a "Channel Partner" according to Nominet.

The rest of this document and website provides the details that you need to be able to use our services and explains our obligations to you and your obligations to us.

Background

We registered the domain name “thorcom.co.uk" in 1994 well before Nominet UK existed or claimed ownership of the “dot UK" domain name space. Back in 1994 internet domain names were free and created on the basis of mutual cooperation by one of several ISPs – in our case EuNET.

We joined Nominet in 1996 as a founder member to protect our company name, domain name(s), registered trademark and other IPR.

Our Nominet membership number is M00536 and we use the THORCOM tag.

What we do

Our primary business in design, manufacture and delivery of mobile data, vehicle location and job dispatch systems for the emergency services including Police, Fire and Ambulance and public transport and public utility market places in the UK, Europe and elsewhere in the world - read more about what we do.

As a secondary function we occasionally register Internet domain names for our own use, for selected customers that need a domain name as part of its strategic route to market for certain technologies or to deliver bespoke solutions for customers. We also register a small number of domain names for a friends and family and for non-commercial use.

Renewals

As you will already be a customer of Thorcom with a credit account, unless you specifically contact us and tell us otherwise, we will assume that you wish to automatically renew your domain name(s) when they become due for renewal.

We will issue you a renewal notice and invoice 60 days before the domain renewal is due. You are expected to pay the invoice within your normal 30 day invoice-payment cycle upon which we will ensure that the domain name(s) in question are renewed in time to provide continued registration of your domain name(s).

If you fail to pay the invoice after 30 days we will send a reminder that your domain is due to expire in 30 days. If you still have not paid the renewal invioice we will contact you again by telephone between 7-14 days before your domain name is due to expire to remind you that it will expire if not renewed.

If you still do not pay the invoice we WILL NOT renew your domain name - your domain will be allowed to lapse.

If you do not agree to renew your domain we will:

a) write to you confirming that you no longer wish to own the domain name;
b) issue a credit note cancelling the domain renewal invoice; and
c) cancel or otherwise delete or "untag" the domain name (see below)
